On Tuesday, May 15th, at the Ronald Reagan Building and International Trade Center, DT partnered with Counterpart International to co-host a panel discussion on “Violent Extremism and Stabilization: A View from the Ground.” DT’s own Shands Pickett gave a technical overview of DT’s lessons learned from our recent CVE and stabilization programs. Using examples from Syria, Iraq, and Yemen, Shands discussed the field application of Sensus, DT's evidence-based approach to increasing programming effectiveness through a better understanding of local-level dynamics. DT shared best practices from our programs -- and also identified what could have been improved -- with the goal of supporting the community of CVE and stabilization practitioners in their own efforts.
Other speakers included Russell Porter, Senior Coordinator for Countering Violence Extremism at USAID, Ann Hudock, Counterpart Executive Vice President, Mehreen Farooq, Counterpart Technical Director of Peace and Security, Kelly Uribe, Senior Stabilization Advisor to the Deputy Assistant Secretary of Defense, and Oliver Wilcox, Deputy Director of CVE at the U.S. Department of State.
